Today, in class, we watched a Bill Nye video over Bones and Muscles, and the students wrote down 8 facts that they learned from the video. I then passed out a study guide for the test that we will be having over the Skeletal System on Monday. The study guide is homework, and due tomorrow (Friday). I am including a link to the answers to the study guide, and there is a link to two skeletal system review games under the Bone Injury Webquest link. Make sure to study over the weekend! ![]()

Today,as part of the unit on the skeletal system, we learned about how broken bones are able to heal. The students took notes on a worksheet in class, and then, as an assignment, they are to create a comic strip showing the process of a broken bone healing. I have attached the notes for the information about broken bones in the notes section of the science website. The other notes for the skeletal system are located there as well. The broken bone comic strip is due tomorrow.
It's nice to see all of the students after a long Christmas break! We are slowly easing back into the swing of thing. Yesterday, there was no homework. We completed group work and answered questions about system in the human body at stations. Today, we read over Chapter 3, section 3 (pages 76-79), and filled out and outline for notes. (I have the powerpoint with the outline posted in the notes section of the website!) This outline is important because it will be a study guide for a quiz over this section on Friday.
The homework tonight is to complete the section review problems from page 79. The students do not need to answer number 3. If this was not turned in during class, then it is due tomorrow! For the past 2 days, we have been learning about different types of cells and the different parts, or organelles inside of a cell. Yesterday, we finished up the notes from chapter 3, section 1, and made a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting Bactria and Archaea, which are the 2 types of Prokaryotic cells. I have attached the Venn diagram that we filled out in class below. Today, the students read chapter 3, section 2 (pages 68-74) and filled out a chart organizing the information about the different organelles in Eukaryotic cells. The homework for the weekend is to draw, color and label a picture of an animal cell (students can use page 69 as a guide). The organelle chart and diagram are due on Monday. I hope everyone has a great weekend! ![]()
Since we are in the middle of cold and flu season, students completed a webquest about germs and how to keep from getting sick. After answering questions on the webquest, students then chose a common illness caused by bacteria--strep throat, botulism, pneumonia, ear infection, or pinkeye--and wrote a paragraph about the illness they chose. Most students finished the assignment in class, but if they did not finish, then it will be homework. Hopefully, we all learned how to stay healthy and keep from getting sick!
(There is a link to the webquest under the Useful Links tab.) Today, we started a unit over cells that last from today until Christmas Break. We looked at the history of cell theory (on pages 60-61 in the textbook), and created a timeline showing the important dates and discoveries that were made about cells. I have posted a sample timeline below--the only date that was not in the book is the first date from 1590. The homework for tonight is to read through the first section about cells (pages 60-66) and fill out a directed reading worksheet. This is due tomorrow. I have posted all of the cell notes under the note tab on the website.
Today, we spent the class period checking over the Chapter 2 study guide (that was due today!) by playing a review game in class. There is a quiz over chapter 2 tomorrow, so the homework for tonight is to study. There are a lot of different ways to study--look over the worksheets we completed in class, use the vocabulary flip chart to study the vocabulary words from section 2, the study guide and there is a section review on page 50-51 with many good questions. Below is a link to the answers to the study guide, for those who would like to double check their work! ![]()
Today, in class, we took notes and discussed what characteristics all living things share. I have posted the notes in the note section of the website. The homework tonight is out of the book: page 41 #1-5, 7 and 8. Please write the answers to 7 and 8 in complete sentences!
Today, we spent some time completing metric conversion story problems as well as reviewing for the quiz tomorrow. We also began a lab testing to see what will happen to a gummy bear when it is left in water overnight. There is a study guide that can be used as practice for the quiz tomorrow. Below is a link to a blank copy of the study guide as well as the answers to the study guide. Remember--you can use your metric staircase to help you on the quiz tomorrow! ![]()

I have decided to begin using the website again to help communicate my lessons with my students and their parents in a more effective manner. For the past week, we have been studying the metric system, and how to make conversions within the metric system. I have been teaching how to use the staircase method--this is a very useful trick to learn! Below is a link to a website that reviews how to complete metric conversions.
Metric Conversion Website--Math Playground Today's homework is a Metric Measurement Conversions worksheet. Students are to complete all of the problems (1-21) on the worksheet, and they may use their metric staircase to help them. We also made flashcards to help practice metric conversion problems in class. They may use their flashcards for help as well. There will be a quiz over metric conversion on Thursday. This worksheet, and the flashcards are great tools to use to help review for the quiz. The worksheet is due tomorrow (November 11th). |
