Today, in class, the students made a booklet to help them take notes over the last 2 sections in chapter 16 (sections 4 and 5). This booklet will allow the students to have their notes all in one place, and the booklet also will give them a chance to draw and be creative (for those students who like to incorporate their artistic abilities in their work!). In class, we read over the section about the Emancipation Proclamation, and took notes over it. There is no homework tonight in social studies!
We will be having our first social studies quiz on Tuesday, November 11th. The quiz is over chapter 16, sections 1-3. Study the study guide that was completed in class on Thursday. Don't forget to review the possible essay questions--pick one and practice writing about it!
The sixth grade is currently learning about the Reconstruction time period in history that occurred after the Civil War. Yesterday, the students were to complete a map showing the different military zones that were created during this time period. It was due today.
We have been hard at work on researching our topics for the Tremont History Project. Students have been gathering information, and they will be writing a page about their topic to include in the 6th grade Tremont History book. Rough drafts of the articles are due on Monday. Articles should be a page long (handwritten).
We are well on our way to studying the history of Tremont. Last Friday, all of the sixth grade classes took their first "walking tour" of Tremont. We visited the Opera house, which was built in 1899 and located over Purdues, the First National Bank, and Beecham's Grocery Store. On Tuesday, the students walked to Sampson Street and compared and contrasted a picture of Sampson Street in the 1930s to the modern day Sampson Street. Today, Jeff Moser came and talked to the students during first hour about the history of Cullinan.
I encourage students to be thinking about a possible topic to research for the Tremont History Project. The students will be required to research a topic and write an article that will be a part of the sixth grade Tremont history book. We will be visiting the Tremont History Museum this Friday to introduce the students to more intere |
